Appointments & Your First Visit
ExpandPlease bring your photo ID, insurance card, applicable copayment, a current list of medications and supplements, and any referral or authorization forms your insurance plan requires.
New patients should also complete the appropriate patient forms before their appointment whenever possible. Having this information ready allows our team to better understand your medical history, current medications, allergies, previous treatments, and the concerns you would like to discuss.
If you are being evaluated for a specific skin problem, it may also be helpful to bring information about previous treatments or medications you have tried.
Your medications are an important part of your medical history. Prescription medications, over-the-counter products, vitamins, and supplements can sometimes affect your skin, hair, or nails or interact with medications and treatments used in dermatology.
Providing an accurate medication list helps your dermatology provider evaluate your concerns and recommend treatment with your overall health and safety in mind.
Your appointment will depend on the reason for your visit. Your provider may review your medical history, discuss your symptoms or concerns, examine the affected area, and recommend additional testing when appropriate.
From there, we can discuss your diagnosis and treatment options and develop an individualized care plan. Depending on your condition, treatment may include prescription or topical medications, in-office procedures, ongoing monitoring, or additional dermatologic care.
Consider scheduling a dermatology appointment when you notice a new, persistent, changing, or uncomfortable concern involving your skin, scalp, hair, or nails. This may include persistent acne, unexplained rashes, itching, hair loss, nail changes, excessive sweating, changing moles, unusual skin growths, or a spot that bleeds, changes, or does not heal.

Yes. Wasatch Dermatology provides dermatologic care for children and adults. Children can experience many of the same skin conditions as adults, along with concerns that are especially common during childhood and adolescence.

Yes. Dermatology extends beyond the skin. Our providers diagnose and treat conditions affecting the hair, scalp, and nails, including hair loss, alopecia, dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, scalp psoriasis, nail fungus, ingrown toenails, and nail psoriasis.
Because hair and nail changes can have many potential causes, a dermatologic evaluation can help determine what may be contributing to the problem and which treatment options are appropriate.
Yes. Our dermatology team can evaluate moles, skin tags, lesions, warts, and other skin growths and determine whether removal is appropriate.
Before removing a growth, your provider may examine it to determine whether it appears benign or requires additional evaluation. The appropriate removal technique depends on the growth's type, size, location, and characteristics.
Yes. We evaluate and treat excessive sweating, also known as hyperhidrosis. Hyperhidrosis may affect areas such as the underarms, hands, feet, or forehead and can interfere with everyday activities and quality of life.
Treatment recommendations depend on the severity and location of the sweating and may include prescription antiperspirants, oral medications, injectable treatments, or other approaches.
Skin Cancer Screenings & Mohs Surgery
ExpandFor many patients without a personal history of skin cancer, Wasatch Dermatology recommends an annual skin examination. Patients who have previously had skin cancer may be advised to return more frequently, such as every six months.
Your recommended screening schedule can vary based on your personal and family history, sun exposure, number and type of moles, previous abnormal biopsies, and other risk factors. Your dermatologist can recommend an appropriate schedule based on your individual risk.
During a skin cancer screening, your dermatology provider carefully examines your skin for suspicious moles, lesions, growths, or other changes that may warrant closer evaluation.
If an area looks concerning, your provider may recommend monitoring it, performing a biopsy, or taking another appropriate step to determine whether additional treatment is necessary.
Schedule an evaluation if you notice a mole or lesion that is new, changing in size, shape, or color, looks noticeably different from your other spots, repeatedly bleeds or crusts, becomes painful or itchy, or does not heal normally.
You do not have to wait until your next routine skin check if you notice something concerning. A dermatologist can examine the area and determine whether further testing is necessary.
Yes. Wasatch Dermatology provides Mohs micrographic surgery for certain types of skin cancer when appropriate. Mohs surgery removes cancerous tissue in carefully controlled layers while the surgeon examines the tissue during the procedure. This approach allows the surgeon to remove cancer cells while preserving as much surrounding healthy tissue as possible.
Whether Mohs surgery is recommended depends on factors such as the type, size, location, and characteristics of the skin cancer.
Medical vs. Cosmetic Dermatology
ExpandMedical dermatology focuses on diagnosing, treating, and managing conditions that affect the health of your skin, hair, scalp, and nails. Examples include acne, eczema, psoriasis, rashes, hair loss, nail disorders, suspicious lesions, and skin cancer.
Cosmetic dermatology focuses primarily on aesthetic concerns, such as fine lines, wrinkles, volume loss, uneven skin tone or texture, pigmentation, acne scarring, hair thinning, and body contouring.
Wasatch Dermatology offers medical and surgical dermatology, along with cosmetic services through SkinSculpt MedSpa + BodyShaping.
Cosmetic procedures are considered elective and are generally not covered by medical insurance. Patients are responsible for the cost of cosmetic treatments.

Insurance, Referrals & Payment
ExpandWasatch Dermatology accepts several health insurance plans for eligible medical and surgical dermatology services. Current plans listed by the practice include Medicare, Deseret Mutual Benefit Association, First Health/CCN, GEHA, Select Health with certain network exclusions, Mailhandlers, Tricare, and Workers’ Compensation Fund.
Because insurance participation and individual benefits can change, we recommend contacting your insurance company or our office before your appointment to confirm coverage.
When Wasatch Dermatology participates with your insurance plan, our team can submit eligible medical and surgical dermatology claims to your insurance company.
You are still responsible for any amount your insurance company designates as patient responsibility, which may include copayments, deductibles, coinsurance, or non-covered services.
This depends on your insurance plan. Some plans require patients to obtain a referral from a primary care provider or receive prior authorization before certain dermatology visits, procedures, or treatments.
We recommend checking your insurance requirements before your appointment. If you have not obtained a required referral or authorization, you may be responsible for the cost of the service.
